Warden Default Operative (Waste Removal)

We are looking for a Warden Default Operative (Waste Removal) that will be working as part of a team with responsibility for the cleansing of public and private areas (Default work)

Duties and responsibilities:

  1. To carry out the instructions of the Team Leaders/South/East Coordinator in a safe, competent, and proper manner.
  2. Responsible for the removal and disposal of accumulated waste within yards and gardens, also on private/unadopted and public land, including incidents of dog fouling, waste will include but is not limited to unauthorised fly tipping, soil, leaves and weeds, green waste, white goods, household waste, putrescent and clinical waste, rubble, litter, and graffiti to maintain clean public spaces within given locations across the district.
  3. To board up/secure properties from a ground level if needed/required
  4. Support the Neighbourhood Warden section/service with default/cleansing procedures.
  5. To clear property and land externally when required.
  6. Responsible for removing waste from yards and gardens, also may need to clear from sheds and outhouses under our default procedure.
  7. To assess and price/estimate costs of clearance of yards, gardens, and private land.
  8. Ensure compliance with the Council’s practices and procedures in particular the Safe Working procedures for the disposal of hazardous waste.
  9. Provide advice and assistance to residents where appropriate.
  10. To remove and dispose of hypodermic needles and associated paraphernalia as requested.
  11. Assist in the removal and disposal of clinical waste from designated areas.
  12. Provide advice and assistance to residents where appropriate.
  13. Liaise with internal partners such as pest control, refuse and recycling, Clean and Green and Environmental Health.
  14. To complete logs/timesheets and other relevant forms as required during daily operations.
  15. To attend meetings and training courses relevant to the post as required.

The candidates must have:

  • Educated to NVQ (2) or equivalent in a relevant subject (or working towards)
Experience of the front-line services covered by this post or similar areas.
  • Experience of working with the public
Experience of working in an operational related area.
  • Ability to recognise vulnerable members of the community during the course of your duties and report/ refer concerns to supervision.
  • Need to work alongside the Neighbourhood Warden team and internal partners agencies, such as Clean and Green, Refuse and recycling. Physically fit due to manual handling sometimes heavy/awkward items.
  • Investigating fly tipped waste by physically sifting through waste
  • Maybe required to use specialised tools using all available resources. The ability to assess/estimate the amount and weights of material plus costs for removal and disposal

The ability to use email and basic IT systems
To be able to plan their workload/schedule with support from supervision.

  • Flexible approach to work including working with others to ensure tasks are completed.
  • To work longer hours during summer as required.
  • Due to the requirement to drive a County Council vehicle in this role, appointment will be subject to the production of a valid driving licence for the required category of vehicle and the satisfactory completion of an in-house Driver Induction Assessment.
  • The ability to be able to drive a caged vehicle, category C1 licence required (covers up to 7.5 tonnes)
